Which behaviors are here to stay and how do we plan for the future?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The supplement industry experienced historic sales in 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, 18 months after the start of the pandemic, and with our \u201cnew normal\u201d in full swing, it is time to understand: which behaviors were a short-term reaction? And, more importantly, which behaviors are here to stay and how do we plan for the future?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

eCommerce trends -- particularly those from Amazon <\/em>-- are where brands, retailers, and suppliers can turn to for a sneak peek into what is next for the supplement industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • We saw meteoric demand for supplements online<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

    As of May 2021, the supplement industry experienced a 54% <\/strong>year-over-year (YoY) growth rate on Amazon. Gains are partially due to the COVID-19 pandemic pushing consumers to eCommerce, but even moving well into 2021, consumers are still spending the same (or more) as they did prior to the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • Probiotics Lead in Sales<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      In the last 12 months, Probiotics captured the most sales across all supplement categories online. However, it is equally important to observe that the top five categories have an average 60% <\/strong>YoY growth rate, which underscores just how widespread the demand for supplements is and will continue to be. A recent study even showed that 86% of Americans now take dietary supplements to improve their overall health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      • Immunity sales are declining while longer-term winners are emerging<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        Immunity supplements like Zinc and Vitamin D have seen skyrocketing demand, which contributed to their high YoY growth. However, moving into 2021, immunity sales are declining, while supplements like Apple Cider Vinegar and Melatonin are experiencing steady sales above pre-pandemic levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        • 3 Supplement Categories to Watch<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

          In addition to Apple Cider Vinegar and Melatonin seeing continued momentum in 2021, other categories are experiencing heightened or sustained consumer interest and should be closely monitored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Collagen is not only a top 3 supplement category online, but it is also growing quickly and steadily. Considering the growing range of applications for Collagen, as well as its expansive set of potential customers, it is no surprise that Collagen supplements are continuing to fly off the digital shelf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          \"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

          Aminos saw a huge spike during the pandemic and then leveled off in the second half of 2020. After the usual seasonal dip in the winter months, it rebounded to the elevated post-COVID levels and has only continued to experience revenue growth since then. It is also important to note that the dominant delivery method in the category is Powders, with almost 90% market share. Tablet form, however, is the one to watch, with much stronger YoY growth than the other two, at 64%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Though a smaller category when it comes to total revenue, Ashwagandha is growing very quickly online and should continue on an upward trajectory. NutriRise, Physician\u2019s Choice, and NaturaLife Labs are currently the top 3 brands. Additionally, 97% of Ashwagandha sold on Amazon is made from roots. The other 3% is made from a combination of roots and leaves or just leaves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
